The Supergirl movie opened internationally on June 24, 2026 and in North American theaters and IMAX on June 26. Warner Bros. has confirmed a digital and premium video-on-demand release for July 28, 2026, priced at $24.99 to purchase, with Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD following on September 8.
That is a fast turnaround: 32 days from theatrical debut to digital, shorter than the 35 days Superman took in 2025 and well inside the traditional 77-day window. An HBO Max streaming date has not been announced, though the compressed digital timeline suggests it may not be far behind.
What Is the Supergirl Movie About?
Per the official synopsis, when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
In practice it is a space western with a Kryptonian lead who would rather be drinking on a red-sun planet than saving anyone. Kara is drifting through the cosmos with Krypto, trying to escape life in her cousin’s shadow, when she meets a young woman named Ruthye who is hunting the mercenary who murdered her father. The film adapts Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2021 comic miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and it runs a tight 1 hour 48 minutes with a PG-13 rating.

What Went Wrong at the Box Office
The film has grossed roughly $70.8 million domestically and $53 million internationally for a worldwide total near $123.8 million. Against a reported $170 million production budget plus roughly $120 million in marketing, and an estimated break-even point around $315 million, that is a substantial shortfall.
The warning signs came early. Opening weekend projections slid from over $55 million to around $40 million in the weeks before release, and the film took $7.8 million in previews compared to Superman’s $22 million a year earlier. Reviews did not help: critics landed at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, and CinemaScore audiences gave it a B-.
The more interesting split is between critics and paying audiences. The Popcornmeter sits at 75%, more than twenty points above the critics’ score, and Alcock’s performance drew near-universal praise even in negative reviews. This looks less like a film audiences rejected and more like one that struggled to convince people to show up in the first place, hurt by months of online argument before anyone had seen it.
A 75% audience score against 54% from critics suggests the problem was getting people into the theater, not what happened once they were there.

Should You Watch It?
This is exactly the kind of film that plays better at home than its box office suggests. A 108-minute cosmic revenge story with a genuinely strong lead performance and Jason Momoa clearly having a great time as Lobo is an easy rental, even if it never quite justified a $170 million budget.
It also matters for what comes next.
