Lanterns arrives in two weeks, and it is the first live-action DC Studios series under James Gunn's Gods and Monsters chapter. It is also not the show most people expect from a Green Lantern adaptation. Here is the full schedule, cast and what it actually is.

Lanterns Release Date and Episode Schedule

Lanterns premieres Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO, streaming the same night on HBO Max. International viewers get it Monday, August 17.

The season runs eight hour-long episodes, weekly rather than all at once:

  • Episode 1 – August 16
  • Episode 2 – August 23
  • Episode 3 – August 30
  • Episode 4 – September 6
  • Episode 5 – September 13
  • Episode 6 – September 20
  • Episode 7 – September 27
  • Episode 8 – October 4

What Lanterns Is Actually About

Per the official synopsis, the series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The framing matters. Despite the cosmic source material, this stays almost entirely on Earth. It is built as a detective story first, with the power rings used as investigative tools rather than as an excuse for setpieces. The show also runs two timelines, with events in 2016 feeding into the present-day case.

The obvious comparison, made by nearly everyone including the network, is True Detective. Whether that survives contact with a superhero property is the open question.

The Lanterns Cast

  • Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, an older, worn-down version of the character
  • Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the disciplined ex-Marine recruit
  • Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, the local law enforcement grounding the story
  • Laura Linney, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan
  • Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro
  • Nathan Fillion, reprising Guy Gardner from 2025's Superman
  • Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones

The Creative Team Is the Story

Lanterns was co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Mundy showruns, having made Ozark. Lindelof made Watchmen and Lost. King is one of the most acclaimed comics writers working, known for character-driven, melancholy takes on superheroes.

James Gunn and Peter Safran executive produce alongside Ron Schmidt and director James Hawes. That combination signals intent: this is being positioned as prestige drama that happens to involve power rings, not a network superhero show.

Ozark's showrunner, Watchmen's creator and one of comics' best writers, making a Green Lantern murder mystery set in the American heartland.

How It Connects to the DCU

This is the first live-action DC Studios TV series in the rebooted universe, and it is not standalone. Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner carries over directly from Superman, and Aaron Pierre reprises John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow in 2027.

That makes Lanterns a genuine bridge rather than a side project, which is a meaningful shift from how DC handled television previously.

Where to Watch Lanterns

HBO / HBO Max

You can watch Lanterns on HBO at 9:00 p.m. ET Sundays from August 16, or stream it on HBO Max the same night with a standard subscription. Episodes release weekly through October 4, so there is no binge option.

Should You Watch It?

The pitch is unusually strong for a superhero series, and the grounded approach is a deliberate correction after the 2011 Green Lantern film failed by going the opposite direction. Chandler and Pierre are a genuinely interesting pairing.

The risk is tonal. A slow-burn murder mystery may frustrate viewers wanting cosmic spectacle, while the ring-slinging may undercut the crime drama for everyone else. We will have a verdict once episodes land.
