Verity opens in wide release on Friday, October 2, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios distributes in the United States and Canada, with Sony Pictures Releasing handling international territories.
The date moved. Verity was originally locked for May 15, 2026 before Amazon pushed it to October — a shift from a spring slot into the autumn thriller window, where adult-skewing genre films tend to do better. Older articles may still quote May.
The film carries a reported $40 million budget, modest for a cast this size, which is typical of the psychological thriller space.
What Verity Is About
Lowen Ashleigh is a writer in serious need of work when Jeremy Crawford contacts her. His wife, bestselling author Verity Crawford, has been incapacitated by an accident and cannot complete her book series. Lowen is hired to ghostwrite the remaining novels.
She moves into the Crawford home to work. There she finds an unfinished autobiographical manuscript attributed to Verity, containing disturbing accounts of the family — and of Jeremy. As Lowen keeps reading, and grows closer to Jeremy, the situation turns.
The teaser leans hard into that unease. Hathaway’s voiceover warns that even with continuous warning, you are going to continue to ingest my words — but know one thing: there is no light where we are going. It ends on Lowen realising the man she is kissing may not be who she thinks.

This is a busy year for Hathaway. Verity follows Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2 — which took roughly $677 million worldwide — and The Odyssey, with The End of Oak Street also due. Going from a mainstream comedy sequel to an erotic psychological thriller in the same year is a deliberate range play.
Behind the Camera
Michael Showalter directs, from a screenplay by Nick Antosca. Showalter made The Big Sick and, more relevantly, reunites here with Hathaway after The Idea of You in 2024 — also a book adaptation.
Antosca is the more interesting credit. He created Channel Zero and wrote The Act, both built on unsettling, psychologically claustrophobic material, which is precisely what Verity needs.

Notably, Colleen Hoover produces alongside Hathaway, Showalter, Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher and Jordana Mollick. The author being directly involved matters for a book whose adaptation will be judged largely on one decision.
The Colleen Hoover Adaptation Wave
Verity is Hoover’s fourth book to reach the screen recently, following It Ends With Us, Regretting You and Reminders of Him. The commercial case is well established at this point.
What sets Verity apart is that it is not a romance. Hoover self-published it in 2018, Grand Central Publishing acquired it in 2021, and it became a New York Times bestseller largely on word of mouth about how dark it gets. It is categorised as a psychological erotic thriller rather than the contemporary romance her other adaptations sit in.
Hoover’s fourth adaptation in three years — and the first that is not a romance. The whole film turns on one decision about the ending.
Where to Watch Verity
Verity is a wide theatrical release. No streaming date has been announced, but Amazon MGM titles reach Prime Video afterwards, typically within a few months of opening. Given Amazon is distributing domestically, that is the expected home.
Should You Watch It?
If you have read the book, you already know the question: the novel’s ending is genuinely ambiguous, and readers have argued about it for years. Whether the film commits to one reading or preserves the ambiguity is the single thing the adaptation will be judged on.
If you have not, this is a well-cast thriller from a director with a good record and a writer who specialises in exactly this tone. Going in cold is arguably the better experience.
