What’s in this guide
Sixteen years after The Social Network changed how Hollywood tells tech stories, Aaron Sorkin is going back to Facebook. The Social Reckoning is his new film about the whistleblower who leaked the company’s most guarded secrets, and it arrives in theaters on October 9, 2026. If you have been looking for the release date, the full cast, the trailer, or where to watch it, this guide covers everything.
The Social Reckoning Release Date
The Social Reckoning will be released in US theaters on October 9, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film opens exclusively in cinemas, sixteen years after The Social Network premiered in 2010. It held a gala screening in London on September 29, 2026, ahead of its worldwide theatrical rollout.

What Is The Social Reckoning About?
The film tells the true story of Frances Haugen, a young Facebook data engineer who copied thousands of the company’s internal documents and leaked them to the Wall Street Journal. With the help of reporter Jeff Horowitz, her revelations became The Facebook Files, the 2021 investigation that exposed how much the company knew about the harm its platforms caused.
A true David and Goliath story.
Sony calls the film a David and Goliath story: one employee and one journalist taking on one of the most powerful companies on Earth. Expect Sorkin’s trademark fast dialogue, this time aimed at the modern Facebook rather than its scrappy startup days.
Is The Social Reckoning a Sequel to The Social Network?
Not exactly. Sorkin and Sony describe it as a companion piece to The Social Network rather than a direct sequel. It jumps forward to 2021, uses a mostly new cast, and Sorkin directs this time, after David Fincher directed the original. One familiar name does return behind the camera: cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, who shot the 2010 film. You do not need to have seen The Social Network to follow this one, though watching it first adds plenty of context.
Cast and Crew

The biggest talking point is the recasting of Mark Zuckerberg. Jesse Eisenberg, who played him in The Social Network, chose not to return, so Jeremy Strong steps into the role after months of studying Zuckerberg’s interviews and congressional testimony. Oscar winner Mikey Madison (Anora) leads the film as Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, plays Horowitz. Bill Burr and Wunmi Mosaku appear as members of Zuckerberg’s legal team.
Where to Watch The Social Reckoning
At launch, the only way to watch The Social Reckoning is in theaters. Sony has not announced a streaming date yet. Sony’s theatrical films usually arrive on Netflix a few months after their cinema run under the studio’s streaming deal, so a Netflix release in early 2027 is likely, but treat that as an expectation, not a confirmed date. We will update this guide as soon as Sony confirms the streaming plan.
