Marvel Studios closed out its San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel with one of the weekend’s biggest reveals: Black Panther 3 is officially confirmed, and the mantle is passing to a new Black Panther. Here’s everything announced.
Black Panther 3 Release Date
Ryan Coogler and Marvel president Kevin Feige confirmed Black Panther 3 will open in theaters on December 15, 2028, arriving after next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Coogler also revealed the film will be the first MCU project shot entirely on large-format celluloid film.
Who Is David Jonsson Playing?
David Jonsson has been cast as Toussaint, also known as T’Challa II, the grown son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia. The character was introduced as a young child in the post-credits scene of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The new film will follow him coming of age with his sights set on Wakanda’s throne, meaning some form of time jump is likely involved to age the character up.
Jonsson is a rapidly rising British actor, known for The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus, HBO’s Industry, and 2023’s Rye Lane. He joined Coogler onstage at Comic-Con alongside returning cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, keeping his own remarks brief and thanking Coogler and Feige for the opportunity.

Why This Casting Matters
Chadwick Boseman originated the role of T’Challa starting with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before leading 2018’s Black Panther to a $1.3 billion global box office and a historic Best Picture Oscar nomination, the first for a superhero film. After Boseman’s death from colon cancer in 2020, Marvel chose not to recast T’Challa, instead writing his death into Wakanda Forever’s story and passing the Black Panther identity to Shuri. Jonsson’s casting marks the first time an actor will step into a version of T’Challa himself since Boseman, making this one of the most closely watched casting decisions in the franchise’s history.
