The Record Weekend Numbers
The North American marketplace hit roughly $429 million across all films for the weekend of July 31 to August 2, 2026 — the biggest domestic frame ever recorded, beating the $402.1 million set during Avengers: Endgame's opening in 2019.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day drove it, opening to around $360 million domestically. That surpasses Endgame's $357.1 million to become the biggest domestic opening weekend on record. It also crossed roughly $927 million worldwide almost immediately, putting a billion-dollar global total within days.
Figures shifted through the weekend as estimates firmed up, which is why some outlets reported $355 million on Sunday before Monday actuals landed higher.
What Else Was Playing
The Odyssey took second with $51 million, bringing Christopher Nolan's epic to $395.5 million domestically after leading the previous two weekends.
Notably, studios released nothing new against these two. Nobody wanted to open between Nolan's film and Spider-Man, which concentrated the entire weekend's business into a small number of titles.
Tom Holland and Zendaya appear in both films, which is an unusual quirk — the two biggest films in the market share their leads.

What This Means for the Year
The 2026 domestic box office now sits at roughly $6.1 billion, up 15.2 percent on the same point last year. Analysts expect the summer to pass $4 billion for the first time since 2023, and the year to clear $10 billion — which would make 2026 the highest-grossing year since 2019.
Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak called it perhaps the most important summer moviegoing season in the history of the business, and argued it puts to rest the idea that audiences no longer want to go to cinemas.
The timing is pointed. It comes as Netflix trades near twelve-month lows and while a Paramount and Warner Bros. merger sits paused in an antitrust suit. Theatrical had a good week to have a good week.
Still to Come in 2026
August brings Insidious: Out of the Further on the 21st. The bigger test is December 18, when Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three open on the same day — the collision fans have nicknamed Dunesday. If August is any indication, cinemas will take it.
