Ashfall Horizon trades spectacle for character work in its second act, and the gamble mostly pays off. After an opening act that leans hard into the franchise’s usual set-piece rhythm, the film slows down and lets its cast actually sit with the fallout of the first movie’s ending.
What works
The quieter midsection is where the film earns its stripes. Two extended dialogue scenes between the leads carry more weight than anything in the trailer, and the score finally gets room to breathe instead of just underlining every beat.
What doesn’t
The third act snaps back into franchise autopilot, and a late twist feels bolted on to set up the next installment rather than earned by this one.
