What’s in this guide
It cost less than a house, it was made by a 26-year-old who learned filmmaking on YouTube, and it became the horror phenomenon of 2026. Obsession is Curry Barker’s twisted love story about a shy music store clerk who wishes his crush would love him more than anyone in the world, and gets exactly what he asked for. The film has grossed more than $520 million worldwide, turned Inde Navarrette into the year’s breakout scream queen, and left audiences arguing about one question: what really happens at the end? This guide covers the release story, the trailer, the cast, where to watch it, and the ending, explained in full.
Obsession Release Date
Obsession opened in US theaters on May 15, 2026, released by Focus Features, with Universal Pictures handling most international territories. It had premiered eight months earlier, on September 5, 2025, in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival, where Focus bought it for a reported $14 to $15 million, the highest price ever paid for a genre film at TIFF. Jason Blum then joined as an executive producer under Blumhouse Productions.
The numbers still look unreal. Shot in Los Angeles in 26 days for at most $750,000, the film has earned more than $520 million worldwide, becoming Focus Features’ highest-grossing release of all time, the highest-grossing film ever made for under $1 million, and the fifth highest-grossing horror film in history. It runs 109 minutes and is rated R. Critics landed at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it an A minus CinemaScore, rare air for horror. If you missed it the first time, Regal is bringing it back for one night only in 4DX on October 14, 2026.
Obsession Trailer
Watch the official trailer for Obsession below. It starts like a sweet indie romance, a nervous guy, a girl who calls everyone “babe,” a twig snapped in frustration, and then the smile arrives. Pay attention to how long the trailer holds on Nikki’s face. That stare, equal parts love and threat, became the image of the year and launched a thousand TikToks.

What Is Obsession About?
Baron “Bear” Bailey (Michael Johnston) works at a music store and has been hopelessly in love with his coworker Nikki Freeman (Inde Navarrette) for years. She likes him, just not like that: to Nikki, he is a little brother, and she has quietly been involved with their friend Ian (Cooper Tomlinson) for two years. One night, sent to a crystal shop to buy Nikki a gift, Bear picks up a novelty toy instead: a One Wish Willow, a $6.99 twig that promises one wish when snapped. When Nikki asks him outright whether he likes her and he cannot say it, he goes home and snaps the twig. He wishes Nikki loved him more than anyone in the world.
The wish works perfectly. That is the horror of it. Nikki does not fall in love with Bear. She is replaced by a love that cannot stop, cannot sleep, and cannot let him go.
What follows starts as a dream and curdles fast. Nikki moves in, watches him sleep, duct tapes the front door shut, and stands in one spot all day waiting for him to come home. The film’s cruelest twist is that the real Nikki is still in there, trapped and aware inside her own body. On the rare moments the thing wearing her face falls asleep, she surfaces, begging Bear to free her. Bear, who finally has the love he always wanted, has to decide whether he is a romantic or a jailer, and he keeps choosing wrong. As her devotion turns violent, the people around them, including Sarah (Megan Lawless), the coworker who actually liked Bear, are pulled into the blast radius.
Obsession Ending Explained
Spoiler warning: everything below gives away the ending of Obsession. If you have not seen the film yet, jump to Where to Watch and come back after.
The rules come from the most disturbing phone call in the film. When Bear rings the One Wish Willow customer service line, the representative (voiced by director Curry Barker himself) tells him the wish has no expiry date and no refund policy: it ends only when the person who made it dies. That leaves three ways out. Bear dies, Nikki dies, or someone else snaps a fresh One Wish Willow and wishes the first wish undone.
Bear tries the third option too late and too timidly. By then, Nikki has already discovered his secret meeting with Sarah and murdered her, smashing her head with a brick and later posing her body in Bear’s home, dressed in Sarah’s clothes. Bear begs Ian to make the undoing wish, but Ian does not believe a word of it and wishes for a billion dollars instead, which the Willow grants instantly, cash raining through his ceiling. When a gloating Ian bursts into Bear’s house moments later, the cornered, gun-waving Nikki shoots him dead on the spot.
That leaves the first option. Bear takes the gun, locks himself in the bathroom, and, too frightened to shoot himself, swallows a lethal amount of oxycodone, the same painkillers that accidentally killed his cat Sandy at the start of the film. His death should free Nikki. But while he is dying, Nikki finds the spare Willow he had bought for the undo wish, and she makes a wish of her own: that Bear would love her back, exactly as much as she loves him. The wish takes hold. Bear stumbles out of the bathroom glowing with adoration, kisses her, and collapses dead from the overdose.
His death breaks the original spell at the very moment Nikki raises the gun to her own head. The real Nikki snaps back into her body, alone in a house full of corpses, covered in blood, screaming, with two of her closest friends dead by her own hands and the man who caused all of it dead by his own. The thing that loved Bear is gone. The woman who never chose any of it has to live with what it did. Barker actually filmed a version where Nikki goes through with the shot, a Romeo and Juliet ending, then chose the take where she survives, because it is the colder punishment: Bear escapes all consequences, and Nikki inherits every one of them.
Cast and Crew

The film belongs to its two leads. Michael Johnston, best known as Corey Bryant in Teen Wolf, plays Bear as a man whose shyness curdles into something quietly monstrous, while Inde Navarrette (Superman & Lois, 13 Reasons Why) gives the performance of the year as Nikki, switching between warmth, mania, and trapped terror, with every scream and strange movement done for real, no CGI. Cooper Tomlinson, Barker’s partner in their YouTube sketch duo That’s A Bad Idea, steals scenes as Ian before the film breaks your heart with him. Megan Lawless plays Sarah, and comedy veteran Andy Richter is Carter, the music store owner and Sarah’s father. Behind the camera, Curry Barker wrote, directed, and edited the film, and even voices the One Wish Willow’s customer service representative. Producers are James Harris, Haley Nicole Johnson, Christian Mercuri, and Roman Viaris, for Tea Shop Productions, Capstone Studios, and Blumhouse.

Obsession FAQ
When did Obsession come out?
Obsession premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, and opened in US theaters on May 15, 2026, released by Focus Features. It runs 109 minutes and is rated R.
How does Obsession end?
Spoilers: Bear, realising the wish only ends when he does, overdoses on oxycodone. Before he dies, Nikki uses a second One Wish Willow to wish he loved her back, so his last moments are spent adoring her. His death breaks the spell, and the real Nikki wakes up in her own body, surrounded by the friends the entity killed while wearing her face.
Does Nikki die in Obsession?
No. Nikki survives. She raises a gun to her own head, but Bear’s death breaks the wish first, and she comes back to herself. Director Curry Barker filmed an alternate ending where she dies, then chose the version where she lives, because surviving with the consequences is the harsher fate.
What is the One Wish Willow?
The One Wish Willow is a $6.99 novelty toy Bear buys at a crystal shop. Snap the twig and it grants one wish, literally and without safeguards. According to its own customer service line, a wish cannot be cancelled or refunded, and it only expires when the person who made it dies.
Is Obsession based on a true story?
No. Obsession is an original story by Curry Barker, inspired by the monkey’s paw segment of The Simpsons episode “Treehouse of Horror II,” where a wish grants exactly what is asked for, in the worst possible way.
Where can I watch Obsession?
In the US, Obsession is streaming on Peacock (since July 17, 2026). You can also rent or buy it on Amazon, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube, or pick it up on Blu-ray and 4K UHD. Regal is also screening it in 4DX for one night on October 14, 2026.
How much money did Obsession make?
More than $520 million worldwide, against a budget of at most $750,000. That makes it Focus Features’ highest-grossing film ever and the highest-grossing film of all time made for under $1 million.
Will there be an Obsession 2?
Possibly, but not soon. Barker says he has an idea for a follow-up and sees the One Wish Willow as an anthology engine: a new person, a new wish, a new disaster. His next film, Anything But Ghosts, reportedly references the events of Obsession in a news report, which suggests Nikki’s story may not be finished making headlines.
Obsession is the rare viral movie that earns the hype, and its ending gets bleaker the longer you sit with it. If Nikki’s smile is still living in your head, keep the lights on and stay in Blumhouse territory with this autumn’s other nightmare, Other Mommy 2026, where Jessica Chastain faces a very different kind of unwanted presence. We will update this guide with sequel news and Barker’s next moves as they are announced.
