Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 Release Date

The window was revealed at the Annecy animation festival in France in June, followed by a teaser on the Cyberpunk 2077 YouTube channel. A panel at Anime Expo on July 3 went further — attendees were shown the entire first episode, which suggests the series is essentially finished.
A New Crew, Not a Continuation
This is the detail that matters most. Edgerunners 2 does not continue David Martinez's story. It follows four new characters:
- Weak Kingsley — a former edgerunner struggling to move on from his past, still living on old glory days
- D.
- Roman Crarax, described as a cinephile
- Talia Yang
Writer Bartosz Sztybor has said the standalone structure was always the intent rather than a reaction to how the first season ended: the plan was always a self-contained story finishing at ten episodes, which he described as a CD Projekt Red trait.
Netflix's own description sets the tone — a world where only the ruthless survive and one wrong move gets you flatlined.
Who Is Making It
Studio TRIGGER returns, working again with CD Projekt Red. The leadership has shifted, though:
- Kai Ikarashi directs, in his directorial debut. He was animation director and storyboard artist on Episode 6 of the original — one of its most striking hours.
- Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, story writer and producer
- Masahiko Otsuka, TRIGGER's CEO, on screenplay
- Ichigo Kanno as lead character designer
- Tsuneo Imahori composing, known for Trigun
Handing a first-time director the whole season is a real statement of confidence, and the choice of Ikarashi specifically points at the kind of intensity the studio wants to carry over. The trailer song, You Can't Run From Me by Rico Nasty, was written exclusively for the series.
Why the First Season Mattered
Edgerunners is one of the few unambiguous successes in game-to-anime adaptation. It premiered in September 2022 alongside a game still recovering from a troubled launch, and it did something rare: it sent players back to Cyberpunk 2077 in large enough numbers to move sales.
It also won Anime of the Year at the 2023 Anime Awards, beating Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer. That is the bar the sequel is measured against.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 1 is on Netflix now, all ten episodes, included with any subscription and available in Japanese audio plus multiple dubs. Edgerunners 2 will stream exclusively on Netflix worldwide when it arrives.
Language options for the sequel have not been fully confirmed, though the first season shipped with English, French, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs among others.
Do You Need to Watch Season 1?
Officially no — Netflix and CD Projekt Red have positioned this as standalone, and a new cast in a new story means you can start here.
In practice, watch it anyway. Ten episodes is a short commitment, it is genuinely excellent, and it establishes what Night City does to people. That understanding is the engine of everything the sequel is likely to do.
