What’s in this guide
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the highest-grossing film of 2026, the first to cross a billion dollars this year, and as of last week it is streaming. Here is where to watch it, the full voice cast, and the records it broke.
Where to Watch the Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie began streaming exclusively on Peacock on July 30, 2026, included with a subscription. That was a 120-day window from its theatrical opening.
Peacock’s release comes with a substantial set of extras — featurettes covering production, music, characters, hidden details and behind-the-scenes interviews with the filmmakers and cast. The 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie is on Peacock too if you want to rewatch first.
It has also been available to buy or rent digitally since May 19 on Prime Video, Apple TV and other platforms.
Release Timeline
- April 1, 2026 — theatrical release
- May 19, 2026 — digital purchase and rental
- July 30, 2026 — Peacock
One thing worth knowing about where it goes next: under Universal’s distribution arrangement, its animated films typically run on Peacock for around four months, move to Netflix for roughly ten, then return to Peacock. So a Netflix window is likely later, though nothing has been confirmed.
The Box Office Records
The numbers are the story here. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was the first film of 2026 to cross $1 billion worldwide, making it only the 61st film ever to reach that mark.

- Best opening of the year for a Hollywood film, with a $372.5 million global start
- The most successful sequel debut of 2026
- Number one in North America for three consecutive weekends in April
- Pushed the Nintendo film franchise past $2 billion total
For context, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie finished at $1.36 billion and remains the fifth-highest-grossing animated film ever made.
First film of 2026 to reach a billion dollars. Only the 61st ever to do it. And critics and audiences still cannot agree on it.
What the Film Covers
Mario and Luigi are solving everyday problems in the Mushroom Kingdom with their let’s-a-go attitude. They meet a new friend in Yoshi, try to reform a miniaturised Bowser, and look forward to Peach’s birthday party.
Then a call for help sends the crew across the galaxy. Peach and Toad rocket into space to find Peach’s long-lost sister Rosalina, who is being held hostage by Bowser Jr. Mario, Luigi and Yoshi follow.
It draws on Nintendo’s 2007 Super Mario Galaxy, and the choice matters — the Galaxy games are among the most visually inventive Nintendo has made, which gives an animated adaptation far more to work with than the first film’s Mushroom Kingdom setting. Rated PG.

Is It Worth Watching?
This is where it gets interesting. Despite the box office, the film has been genuinely divisive — an unusual disparity between critical and audience response for a blockbuster of this size.
Fans of the games have generally been the more positive group, largely because of how many characters and worlds the film brings in. Fox McCloud appearing at all signals how far Nintendo is willing to open the franchise up.
If the first film worked for your household, this is a straightforward recommendation, and it is free with Peacock now.
