What Toy Story 5 Is About
Disney pitched it as toy meets tech. Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang find their role in Bonnie's life challenged by LilyPad — a tablet in a frog-themed case who arrives with her own ideas about what is best for their kid.
It is a sharper premise than it sounds. The Toy Story films have always been about obsolescence: being replaced, outgrown, forgotten. Making the rival a screen rather than a newer toy updates that anxiety for how children actually play now.
One trailer exchange captures the tone. Jessie tells LilyPad the toys spent all summer trying to get Bonnie to make friends. LilyPad repeats it back word for word, then translates it into Spanish. Funny and quietly unsettling at the same time.

An early clip shown at Destination D23 featured an army of malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear toys causing chaos in the toy box, which suggests the film is not relying solely on LilyPad for its set pieces.
When Toy Story 5 Hits Digital and Disney+
Disney has not announced official home dates, so what follows is based on the studio's recent pattern rather than confirmation.
- Digital purchase and rental — expected around August 18, 2026, following Disney's two-month theatrical-to-PVOD window. Purchases typically run $19.99 to $29.99, rentals $14.99 to $24.99.
- Blu-ray and DVD — expected around September or later in the autumn
- Disney+ — most likely late September through November, depending on how the theatrical run holds
The useful comparison is Zootopia 2. It opened November 26, 2025, reached digital just over two months later on January 27, and arrived on Disney+ on March 11 — roughly three and a half months after opening. It still finished with $1.87 billion worldwide, which is why Disney is unlikely to rush this one.
Where to Watch Toy Story 5
Right now, cinemas are the only option. Once the digital window opens you will be able to buy or rent through Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube and other retailers. Disney+ follows later in the autumn.

Should You Watch It?
The reviews are positive rather than rapturous, and the 77% score reflects a familiar reservation: Toy Story 4 gave Woody a genuine ending, and a fifth film has to justify reopening that.
What the numbers say is that families turned up in record volume, and at 102 minutes this is a tighter film than recent Pixar entries. If you have followed the series, it is worth seeing before the ending gets spoiled for you.
