The first Avatar Studios film is out, and its road to release was a mess: three delays, a cancelled theatrical run, a title change, and the entire film leaking online months early. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is now streaming. Here is where to watch it and whether it was worth the wait.
Avatar Aang Release Date
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premiered on Paramount+ on July 25, 2026, globally. It also had a limited run in New York and Los Angeles theatres to qualify for awards consideration.
If you have seen a different date, that is not your memory failing. The film was dated for October 10, 2025, then January 20, 2026, then October 9, 2026 as a theatrical release — before Paramount shifted it to streaming only in December 2025 and finally moved it up to July.
It is also no longer called The Legend of Aang. Paramount changed the title to Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, and reporting has suggested the rename was partly an attempt to make the leak harder to find online.
The Leak That Changed Everything
In April 2026, the entire finished film leaked online. Not a trailer or a clip — the whole thing.
Staff on the project publicly condemned the leaker, pointing out the years of work involved and the consequences for the artists. Industry professionals and animators joined in. Fans, meanwhile, used the moment to campaign for Paramount to reverse the streaming decision and give the film the theatrical release it was originally promised.
Paramount did not restore the theatrical run, but the leak is widely understood to have accelerated the release from October to July.

What the Film Is About
The story sits between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, with Team Avatar as adults.
Years after the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai, Aang discovers a surviving airbender named Tagah and learns of a powerful staff that could restore his culture. He joins Tagah on a global quest to find it before a group known as the Denied can claim it and threaten the peace they fought for.
It runs roughly 98 minutes, which several reviewers flagged as the film's core problem.

Worth correcting a widely repeated error: Dante Basco is not voicing Zuko. That was reported early and turned out to be wrong — Steven Yeun has the role. Basco is voicing Zym in The Dragon King instead.
The main roles were largely recast, with the production stating this was done in respect of the characters' ethnic and racial backgrounds.
Who Made It
Lauren Montgomery directs, with Steve Ahn and William Mata co-directing. Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost wrote the screenplay, from a story developed with series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who also produce.
Animation came from Flying Bark Productions and Studio Mir, combining 2D hand-drawn characters with 3D computer-animated environments. Jeremy Zuckerman, who scored the original series, returns.
This is the first production from Avatar Studios, the Nickelodeon division founded in 2021. DiMartino and Konietzko were initially involved with Netflix's live-action series before departing to focus on this.
How It Was Received
Mixed, and the split is consistent. Almost every review praised the animation — described variously as breathtaking, consistently stunning, and worthy of the silver screen it never got.
The criticism was equally consistent: the story does not justify itself. Variety called it visually stunning but emotionally inert. Collider argued it is too good to be a streaming afterthought while questioning whether the story needed telling. Several reviewers noted that Tagah gets around twenty minutes to establish himself as a villain, which is not enough weight for what the film asks of him.
The recurring comparison was to The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim — gorgeous, full of detail for fans, and not obviously necessary.

You can watch Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender on Paramount+ now, included with a subscription. The limited theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles was for awards qualification and is not a wide release.

Should You Watch It?
If you love the original series, yes — but manage expectations. The animation genuinely is exceptional, and there is a lot here for people who know these characters. What it is not is a story with real consequence, largely because it sits between two completed shows and cannot disturb either.
If you have never watched Avatar, start with the series. This film assumes you know who everyone is and what they went through.
